Goal of the Group

The goal of this "Strengthening Family Functioning" workshop is to empower individuals with practical skills to enhance family communication, resolve conflicts effectively, and create a supportive environment that fosters emotional well-being. Participants will focus on improving their ability to influence family dynamics and bring about positive changes within their households.

Note:
• Each session will incorporate skill-building through practical exercises, role-plays, and real-time problem-solving discussions.
• Sessions will be structured to ensure participants can practice new techniques between meetings and report back for guidance.
• The therapist will guide discussions and offer feedback to ensure that participants develop confidence in applying the learned techniques.

Glimpse of the regime

Week 1: Understanding Family Dynamics & Common Patterns

• Introduction to Family system
• Understanding Family systems-Bowen Theory
• Discussing about the different yet common family system patterns
• Discussing roles we take up as individuals in each pattern: Rebel, caretaker, mediator, rescuer etc

Exercises we will practice:
• Generational Map
• Identify your role in the family & if you carry it forward in other equations
• Breakout discussions on current challenges faced in family communication.

Action step: Each participant will identify one recurring communication pattern they want to improve and create a goal for the coming weeks.

Week 2: Conflict resolution using Healthy Communication

• Understanding conflict and its internal and environmental triggers
• Learning techniques to resolve conflicts harmoniously
• Identifying the pillars of healthy communication
• Practicing active listening + ‘I statements’ versus the blame game

Exercises we will practice:
• Role play between active listening and venting
• Role play undertaken to practice ‘I statements’
• Role play using the pillars of communication in a healthy way while communicating

Action step: Participants will implement one conflict resolution technique in their family context during the week and report back.

Week 3: Emotional awareness for Conflict Resolution

• Identifying and expressing emotions clearly
• Learning to practice empathy + looking at the same situation from a different perspective during conflict
• Identifying unhealthy patterns & break them via alternatives

Exercises we will practice:
• Discussing an emotion you felt strongly connected with your family interaction and how did you express or not express it?
• What core emotions did you feel and what would your family member have felt?
• Trying to see the situation of conflict from a different perspective
• Learning to hold boundaries or setting them to facilitate healthy conversation

Action step: Participants will try and see the conflict from a different perspective + convey the same by implementing an empathy statement in a real family interaction & try and set a boundary

Week 4: Moving forward via Healthy Boundaries

• Understanding what are boundaries & how to maintain them without feeling guilty
• Difference between weak and strong boundaries
• How they strengthen family bonds and help families function healthily

Exercises we will practice:
• Boundary mapping
• Role play for setting boundaries & accepting them
• Exercise to reinforce that boundaries are good
• Family goal exercise + active commitment towards it
• Concluding with mindfulness deep breathing visualization exercise

Action step: One boundary you plan to maintain now and have an accountability partner for the same that will help you do so.

Zinnia Bharucha is a psychologist with over nine years of experience providing therapy to individuals, couples and families in both online and offline settings. She holds an MSc in Mental Health from King’s College London and an MA in Counselling Psychology from IGNOU. Her integrative approach combines psychoanalytic understanding, cognitive and behavioural tools, trauma-informed techniques and holistic practices to support emotional and relational well-being. Zinnia has worked with clients across different cultural backgrounds globally and specialises in helping couples on the verge of breakup or divorce rebuild clarity and communication. Her warm, non-judgmental style makes it easier for clients to introspect, express openly and strengthen healthy boundaries.

Confidentiality in Support Groups is maintained using secure meeting links and enabling waiting rooms to control participant access. Participants are bound by mutual confidentiality clause within the group. and sessions are not recorded without explicit consent.

Are Group sessions done on video?

Yes, all group sessions are conducted on video via Zoom.

While participants are allowed to use pseudonyms - they need to be on video to make the most of the session.

What is SoulUp's refund policy on Groups?

1. After you have registered for the group and you'd like to opt out:
- Full refund if you cancel 30 days before the group start date.
- 50% refund if you cancel 16-30 days before the group start date.
- No refund if you cancel 0-15 days before the group start date.

2. If SoulUp cancels a group, we will refund the entire signup fee.

3. If SoulUp reschedules a group by more than 2 weeks, we will inform you and give you an option to opt out and get a full refund.

4. SoulUp reserves the right to remove participants from a group if found unsuitable to the group. In such cases participants are given the option of claiming the pro-rata amount left as a refund or using it for another service on SoulUp.

Sharing is encouraged but never forced. Participants are free to share only what they feel comfortable with, and many find that opening up gradually is natural and helpful for their own growth.

6. How do online therapy groups or support groups handle difficult emotions that arise?

The therapist leading the group is trained to manage challenging emotions. They provide tools and strategies for coping, helping participants process feelings safely.

7. Can I attend online therapy groups if I’m already in individual therapy?

Yes, many people find that group therapy superbly complements individual therapy, providing additional insights and social support, thus accelerating their healing. Also, users often join group therapy for a topic that they are not focusing on in their individual therapy sessions. Often, therapists themselves recommend their clients to group therapy for a specific area of their life.

8. How do I know if a support group is right for me?

If you’re looking for shared experiences and emotional support rather than structured therapeutic guidance, a support group may be ideal. Otherwise, consider a therapy group for a more structured approach.

You can also join more than one group if you feel it will benefit you, especially if each group focuses on a different aspect of your mental health journey.
