Goals of the group

The goal of the group is to provide emotional support, share information and resources, and facilitate peer support among individuals affected by cancer.

By offering a supportive community, the group will help improve the overall well-being and quality of life for those navigating the cancer journey.
It aims to enhance coping skills, promote empowerment and advocacy, address practical concerns, and foster hope and resilience in participants.

Who is the group for?

This group is designed for adults 18 years and above in India who are currently undergoing cancer treatment. If you are newly diagnosed or are experiencing the challenges of ongoing treatment, in consolidation phase or in between treatment cohorts, this group will provide a supportive environment to share experiences, gain insights and build your coping strategies.
The group is not designed for those who are terminally ill or transitioning to end-of-life care

Understanding the big C : Session 1 & 2

Session 1: Introduction and Building Connections

- Introduction to the support group and its goals within the Indian context.
- Group members introduce themselves and share their cancer journey (if comfortable) if not anecdotes will be shared
- Overview of session topics and expectations.
- Basic scales on screening will be done for everyone to understanding the physical limitations
- Reflective activities to build a sense of community and trust.
Activity: will be given as a reflective process

Session 2: Understanding the Cancer Journey

- Overview of different types of cancer and treatment options with a focus on cancers being dealt by majority
- Psychoeducation on the physical and emotional impact of cancer and its treatments, including the role of traditional Indian medicine and practices.
- Sharing personal experiences and challenges related to cancer.
- Discussion on managing the side effects of treatment with a holistic approach

Session 3 & 4

Session 3: Communication with Healthcare Providers

- Participant experiences with health care system, Strategies for preparing for medical appointments and asking questions.
- Importance of effective communication with healthcare teams.
- Role-playing exercises to practice communication skills.
- Sharing experiences of positive and challenging interactions with healthcare providers, considering the Indian healthcare system.

Session 4: Coping Strategies (physical, social & emotional)

-Participant experience sharing with scale and exercise on GRIT
- Identifying emotional responses to cancer diagnosis and treatment.
- Techniques for managing anxiety, depression, sleep, fatigue and fear, fear of recurrence, loss of faith.
- Group discussion on coping strategies that have been effective for members.

Session 5

Session 5: Support Networks and Resources

- Identifying and utilizing support systems (family, friends, community resources, including spiritual and religious support).
- Discussion on the role of caregivers and how to maintain healthy relationships with them.
- Building support networks within the hospital
- Group activity to create a personalised support network map.

Session 6

Session 6: Navigating relationships

- Exploring the impact of cancer on personal and professional relationships.
- Communication strategies for discussing cancer with loved ones and colleagues.
- Setting boundaries and managing expectations.
- Sharing experiences and strategies for maintaining healthy relationships during treatment, with sensitivity to Indian familial and societal norms.

What happens in a group session?

While the format can vary as per topic, here’s a flow that most sessions follow

Check In. Participants check-in with each others' feelings and answer the prompt given by the facilitator if any.

Conversation. Your facilitator will guide the group through free-flowing conversation coupled with some simple exercises or activities —with the goal of sharing openly, connecting to your emotions and learning specific skills.

Check Out. Participants share what they're taking away from the session.

How is confidentiality maintained in Groups?

Confidentiality in Support Groups is maintained using secure meeting links and enabling waiting rooms to control participant access. Participants are bound by mutual confidentiality clause within the group. Also, sessions are not recorded without explicit consent.

Are Group sessions done on video?

Yes, all group sessions are conducted on video via Zoom. While participants are allowed to use pseudonyms - they need to be on video to make the most of the session.

What is SoulUp's refund policy on groups?

1. After you have registered for the group and you'd like to opt out:
- Full refund if you cancel 30 days before the group start date.
- 50% refund if you cancel 16-30 days before the group start date.
- No refund if you cancel 0-15 days before the group start date.

2. If SoulUp cancels a group, we will refund the entire signup fee.

3. If SoulUp reschedules a group by more than 2 weeks, we will inform you and give you an option to opt out and get a full refund.

4. SoulUp reserves the right to remove participants from a group if found unsuitable to the group. In such cases participants are given the option of claiming the pro-rata amount left as a refund or using it for another service on SoulUp.
