About the Group

Trauma is not what happens to you, but what happens inside you as a result of what happened to you” - Dr. Gabor Mate.
Trauma is mostly understood as an event (mostly big events like assaults, accidents, loss etc) but it's a response to an event, or a series of events that may take place on a daily basis, be on-going in nature and may not be limited to the past leading to feelings of hopelessness, helplessness and lack of support/resources in our inner as well as external worlds. Human beings are wired for connection and belonging, trauma affects the mind, body, nervous system, relationship with self and others. This group is designed to help participants connect with others, feel supported and learn new coping skills.

Who is the group for?

The group is designed for young adults and adults with experiences of adverse childhood experiences like growing up in a household with experiences and witnessing of neglect, deprivation, violence, death of a caregiver, growing up with an absent caregiver(s), use of substance, ongoing stressors within the environment of a child which may have impact of their sense of safety, security, capacity to form relationships, bonding. While most members here endured abuse/neglect in their childhoods, survivors of relational trauma that began in adulthood are also welcome in this community. A diagnosis of Complex PTSD is not required to join, anyone is welcome who has a history of ongoing abuse/neglect.

Please note: This group is not therapy or a replacement for therapy or any type of medical or mental health care. It is also not a space to process trauma but rather a shared environment to learn how to work through many of the consequences of said trauma, which can include general anxiety, sleep concerns, intimacy, trust issues, learning to maintain relationships, etc.

What will we talk about?
