I was just 10 years old when my brother passed away due to cancer and the grief was overwhelming.
I wanted to become a Chartered Accountant (CA), but the pressure to perform was suffocating. I turned to binge eating as a coping mechanism, which led to significant weight gain. One day, I experienced a terrifying episode of a racing heart, reaching 192bpm. I was diagnosed with a heart attack, but it was later revealed to be WPW syndrome. The procedure itself was gruelling, with no anaesthesia during the 4-hour Cather ablation surgery. The aftermath of the surgery was marked by frequent visits to the casualty department, nightly attacks, and the constant fear of death. I was mentally disturbed, and it took a toll on my well-being.
Before joining college, I sought help from a psychiatrist, but they prescribed medications that led to a rapid 16kg weight gain in just three months. It took six months of therapy sessions to realize that I needed a therapist, not a psychiatrist. The medication-induced weight gain led to knee pain, liver issues, and more panic attacks.
Today, I'm proud to say that I'm a senior product manager for a US-based company, despite coming from a non-traditional IT background. I've overcome my panic attacks, lost 36kgs, and regained control over my life. If you're struggling with anxiety, panic attacks or feelings of hopelessness, know that you're not alone.
