Top Marathi Speaking Therapists In India

People find that speaking in their native language is one of the best ways to express difficult emotions. Why? This is because one's native tongue is a language that you naturally learnt to use to think, feel, and express.

Taking therapy in Marathi can therefore help you in expressing emotions like grief, tackle family dynamics, and cope with anxiety or relationship concerns in the comfort of your own language instead of having to handle the added pressure of translating your thoughts into another language.

Is Therapy in Marathi Effective?

Research shows that therapy in your native language is twice as effective as therapy conducted in English. So yes, if Marathi is your native language then therapy in Marathi is effective. Your native language is your “heart language”, i.e, it is the language that you grew up speaking, therefore, it is entwined with your identity and childhood. This means that when you speak in Marathi, you don't “filter” out anything, which is to say that you don't omit anything. When you're speaking in something other than your native language, you tend to use this “filter” to simplify your feelings which can limit your ability to truly express yourself. Accessing therapy in Marathi is therefore ideal to fully explore your feelings.

It's not just that, but your brain actually processes emotions better in your native language. Research shows that your native tongue activates your brain’s limbic system which is basically your emotional centre better than English. This is because for many Indians, English is their second language, and the second language activates the brain's rational and analytical part resulting in emotional distance from the matter at hand.

Therapy in Marathi also ensures that the therapist shares some part of your background which enables ‘cultural shorthand’ or your ability to communicate, and their ability to understand societal expectations and family dynamics without long explanations.

Moreover, different cultures have different words for distress that cannot be meaningfully translated into another language like English. For example, तळमळ (Talamal) which can be roughly translated into a moment of yearning for something or someone would be better understood by a therapist who speaks Marathi which reduces the cognitive load of having to translate your thoughts constantly but ineffectively.

And not only that, but bilingual therapists like those who speak Marathi and English can understand your background better which allows a better client-therapist relationship and reduces dropping from therapy by a lot.

What Concerns Can You Discuss in Therapy in Marathi?

As with therapy in any language, you can discuss a wide variety of concerns when taking therapy in Marathi. What changes is the depth to which you are able to go into these concerns. One of the primary advantages of therapy in Marathi is the ability to discuss your experience of moving away from your home and community and the grief it comes with, bringing with it a sense of belonging and comfort. You can also tackle issues related to identity and having to balance your native identity while trying to assimilate or blend into another dominant culture.

Apart from these, you could tackle issues like:

  • Family obligations
  • Societal expectations
  • Childhood and attachment wounds
  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Intergenerational trauma
  • Workplace stress and burnout
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • ADHD
  • Low self esteem
  • Sexual identity

In short, you can actually go deeper into these topics if you take therapy in Marathi rather than something that is not your native language.

How to Choose a Marathi-Speaking Therapist

Before starting your search for a therapist, ask yourself: do you want a bilingual therapist? Or the therapist to conduct sessions fully in Marathi? This helps narrow your search so you're not overwhelmed. Another thing you can do is identify your concern so you can find a therapist that specialises in it. This could be trauma, PTSD, stress, anxiety, depression, OCD, BPD, etc. Also, take a look at whether you would like online therapy or in-person as both are equally effective.

Then you can begin your search. When you are searching for a therapist, consider what they specialise in and what their approach is as they could be wildly different. Some therapists follow a structured approach with goals, others follow a more free flowing approach where emotions are dealt with as they come up. There will be some trial and error as you figure out your comfort level with different therapists but finding the right person takes time. Most of the time, you will understand through the rapport building process if the therapist is the right fit for you or not. To do this, see if they explain clinical terms to you in Marathi and if they understand the cultural context of your family. If they are pushing for autonomy or seem lacking in your culture then they're probably not a right fit for you.

It could be a slow process but it's worth it.

Who Should Consider Therapy in Marathi?

You can consider accessing therapy in Marathi if:

1. You are more comfortable speaking in Marathi than in English:

Basically, if you feel your second language acts as a "filter" rather than a bridge, if you are tired of "educating" your therapist on your cultural background, or if you want to access the emotional weight of words that simply do not translate well into English then therapy in Marathi would be the right fit for you.

2. You are an adult looking for therapy:

It's also a good alternative to therapy in English for young and older adults, especially those who've gone through adverse childhood experiences and need a way to explore it in the language of their childhood.

3. You are an NRI:

You could also consider it if you are an immigrant to another city or an NRI and need therapists who would understand your family dynamics and social obligations. This is also effective for those who come from cultures and languages that prioritise familial harmony over individual choices.

4. You feel distant from English

Therapy in Marathi is also an option for those who feel emotionally distant from English and find themselves code switching often, which is to say, they find themselves shifting between identities often.

Therapy in Marathi for NRIs

For non-resident Indians (NRIs), therapy in your native language, like Marathi makes a huge difference for a couple different reasons. The main one being a shared cultural background. As an NRI you would not have to educate your therapist about your background as the gap would be bridged by cultural shorthand. The session could be more focused on dealing with your concerns rather than providing context. Speaking in Marathi could also provide you comfort that's difficult to replicate in your second language.

Living between two worlds is stressful. It leads to homesickness, loneliness and immigrant stress from having to assimilate while preserving your own identity. A therapist who speaks Marathi would understand the pain of leaving your culture behind. They would also understand the exhaustion that comes with balancing dual identities and the familial and social expectations that comes with those identities. And living abroad, you can easily access a therapist in Marathi through online therapy.
