Help me find a Group

Addiction to gambling does not always look as it seems in the movies. It is not always casinos and poker tables. It's also the mindless 2 a.m. scrolling through betting apps, the feeling of numbness that follows losing a bet at a sports bar, or the disappointment of waking up to find your rent gone after a game of online roulette.

It might start without you realising it's gravity, maybe some bets with friends, a win so substantial it makes you feel like you're on cloud nine, or getting away from boredom, stress, or loneliness. But it can soon get difficult to control. You might be trying to recover losses, lying to loved ones, or gambling away hurt that hasn't been communicated.

What is Gambling Addiction Really?

To some people, gambling is fun. But for others, it is a suffocating force that intrudes into daily existence in painful ways. Here are a few actual examples of how it might present:

● "One more spin" of the slot machine game on your phone while avoiding family dinner.

● A paycheck lost in an evening of online poker.

● Hiding bets from your partner in secret, telling them you'll win it back.

● Taking time off work to wager on live events, chasing the rush.

● Being restless, empty, or irritable when you're not gambling like something's amiss.

Perhaps the hardest part of gambling addiction is the loneliness. Most of them struggle in silence, believing that they're the only ones who have an issue. Some feel utterly ashamed if they've lied to their loved ones and friends or made vows to give it up, only to be pulled back in after a bad day or the promise of "one last big score." It's exhausting to keep going around in circles alone, but there is always hope. And one of the strongest places to begin healing is in a support group.

Why Support Groups Are So Important for Gambling Addiction?

Gambling isn't just a habit; it's a complex, even solitary condition that impacts the brain's reward system, emotional regulation, and judgment. It can be inextricably linked with other parts of your life:

your stress level, mental state, history, or self-esteem. Support groups are a safe space where you can talk about all of that with people who truly understand.

Here's how they help:

● You're Not Alone Anymore:

Perhaps the biggest lie addiction tells you is that you're alone. In a group, this illusion disappears in the best possible way. You meet others who walk alongside you.

● You Can Talk Without Shame:

If you've relapsed, lied, or spent money you couldn't afford, no one judges you. Everyone has experienced their own version of it.

● Effective Tools, Not Just Talk:

SoulUp's support groups are not just for encouragement but are here to teach you in real, proven tools to avoid gambling and rebuild your life.

● Small, Safe Cohorts (5-6 individuals):

You won't be lost in the crowd. Everyone has a say.

● Integration of Effective Coping Strategies:

Structured sessions that integrate emotional connection with pragmatic tools and healthy strategies for living independently.

Working on the Whole Person, Not the Gambling

A major reason support groups are so effective is that they recognize that gambling addiction generally does not exist in isolation. People who have a gambling problem will tend to struggle with other problems, emotionally, psychologically, or behaviorally.

SoulUp groups are designed to help not just your gambling recovery, but also the overall context of your life. Many members of the groups could be struggling with:

● Emotional control problems, such as acting impulsively when stressed.

● Anxiety and depression, which often underlie or complicate gambling behaviour.

● Other dependencies such as alcohol, cannabis, prescription drugs, smoking, compulsive shopping, or pornography.

These all sort of overlap at times. When you're working on one of them, you begin to unravel the others as well.

Who Can Join?

Anybody who is struggling with a gambling addiction or who perceives that his or her relationship with gambling isn't healthy anymore is invited. You don't need a diagnosis or a "rock bottom" moment. If you believe you need assistance, that is sufficient. SoulUp's groups are judgment-free, not elitist, and deeply human. Whatever you're attempting to do to stop gambling totally, or just start thinking about how to better understand it, there's space for you here.

You Deserve Support. You Don't Have to Do This Alone. Recovery from gambling addiction is possible. And it starts with community, compassion, and connection, not willpower. A support group isn't a place where you just complain about your problems. It's where you're seen, heard, and reminded of your strength. It's where the transformation starts.

What happens in a group session?

While the format can vary as per topic, here’s a flow that most sessions follow

Check In. Participants check-in with each others' feelings and answer the prompt given by the facilitator if any.

Conversation. Your facilitator will guide the group in a free-flowing conversation—with the goal of sharing openly, talking honestly, and deep emotional connection.

Check Out. Participants share what they're taking away from the session.

What am I going to get out of this?

Participants say that they feel heard, understood, more in control, and a feeling that you’ve got people rooting for you. By talking about your emotions and what's going on in your life, you'll realise that you're not alone and get ideas for how to improve your situation.
