What is Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), and how is it different from traditional talk therapy?

SFBT therapy is a form of counselling that focuses more on where you want to go and what could make things better. Its approach stands out from other ones that tend to explore more about things that went wrong in the past.

The therapist may ask questions about what you want to change, what is already working, and what a small improvement would look like in your everyday life.

For example, if you are struggling with work stress, you might talk about what your ideal workday would look like, when work feels slightly more manageable, and what you do differently on those days. If you are having relationship difficulties, you might explore what a better conversation with your partner would look like rather than only discussing previous arguments.

This does not mean that your past is ignored. But the focus of the conversation does stay closely connected to your present situation and what you want to change.

How many sessions of SFBT do people usually need in India, and how long does each session last?

Solution-focused therapy is used for a range of concerns, including relationship difficulties, work stress, anxiety, decision-making, and periods of change. It can be particularly useful when you have a specific situation you want to work on and would like to think about realistic changes.

For example, someone feeling stuck at work might reflect on a day when things felt a little more manageable and consider what was different about it. A student who keeps putting off assignments might explore what makes it easier to get started, even if they only work for 20 minutes. Someone struggling with their relationships might think about a recent conversation that went better than usual and what they did differently. These small exceptions can give the therapist a better sense of what is already working and where a small change might be possible.

What kinds of problems is SFBT most helpful for?

SFBT is typically described as a brief form of therapy, but there is no fixed number of sessions that works for all. The number depends on the concern you bring, how specific your goals are, how much you want to work on, and how things change between sessions.

A therapist reviews your progress during sessions rather than deciding from the beginning that you will need a particular number of appointments. For example, you might come in with one specific work problem, make some changes, and feel that you have what you need after a few sessions. Whereas someone dealing with several concerns may choose to continue for longer.

Session length also varies between therapists. Many individual therapy sessions are around 45 to 60 minutes, but it is worth asking the therapist about their session length, frequency, and cancellation policy before booking.

Do SFBT therapists in India work only in English, or are sessions available in Hindi and regional languages?

Therapy in India is available in several languages, although this depends on the therapist and where they practise. Some therapists may offer sessions in Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Bengali, Marathi, or other regional languages, while others may work mainly in English or Hindi.

Language matters when you are talking about personal experiences. You may find that you naturally describe emotions in Hindi, switch between English and Kannada when talking about family, or use a regional language when discussing something that happened at home.

If language is important to you, ask the therapist about it before your first session. You can also ask if they are comfortable switching between languages during the conversation.

How do I know if a therapist in India is properly trained in SFBT and not just using the label?

You can ask the therapist directly about their training and experience with Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). A therapist should be able to explain where they were trained, how they use SFBT in their work, and what kinds of concerns they typically address with it.

You can also ask questions such as how they structure sessions, what kinds of questions they usually ask, and how they decide when SFBT may or may not be suitable. A therapist who is familiar with the model should be able to explain it clearly and not just as another jargon for a general description of positive or practical counselling.

It is also useful to check the therapist's broader professional qualifications and registration where applicable, rather than choosing someone based only on a therapy label.

Other common questions

Can SFBT be used alongside medication prescribed by a psychiatrist?

Yes, solution-focused therapy techniques and psychiatric medication can sometimes be part of the same person's treatment. SFBT does not replace medication when medication has been prescribed for a mental health condition.

For example, someone taking medication for depression may also want therapy to work on returning to a daily routine, reconnecting with people, or getting back to activities they previously enjoyed. Someone taking medication for anxiety may use therapy to work on specific situations they are struggling with at home or at work.

It is important that medication decisions are made with the prescribing psychiatrist. A therapist should not ask you to stop, change, or adjust prescribed medication unless they are also the appropriate medical professional managing it.

Is SFBT suitable if I don't want to talk in detail about my past or trauma?

It can be suitable for people who prefer to focus more on their current situation and what they want to change. Learning SFBT techniques does not require you to spend every session going through your childhood, past relationships, or difficult experiences in detail.

For example, you may know that a past experience affects how you respond to conflict, but you may not want to discuss every detail of what happened. You could instead talk about what happens when conflict comes up now, what you would like to respond differently, and times when you have already managed a difficult conversation better.

That said, SFBT may not be the right fit for every concern. If you are dealing with significant trauma symptoms or another complex mental health condition, a therapist can discuss if a different or additional form of treatment would be more appropriate.

Is online SFBT therapy available in India, and is it as effective as in-person sessions?

Online SFBT is available in India through therapists and mental health platforms that offer video sessions. Since SFBT, like other therapy approaches, relies on conversation, questions, reflection, and identifying changes in everyday life, these components of therapy can be conducted online.

For example, you might have a session from home and talk about what went differently during the week, what you would like to change next, and one small step you could try. You can still have the same kind of conversation you would have in an in-person session.

Whether online therapy works well for you can depend on your circumstances. A private space, reliable internet, comfort with video sessions, and a therapist you feel comfortable talking to all matter. If you are dealing with a crisis or need a level of support that cannot be safely provided online, your therapist may recommend an in-person or additional service.

What does a typical first SFBT session look like, and what will the therapist ask me to do?

The first session involves getting to know what brought you to therapy and what you would like to be different. Instead of only asking what is wrong, an SFBT therapist may ask questions such as, "What would you like to change?" "How would you know things were getting better?", or "When is this problem less difficult?"

You can also be asked about times when things have gone slightly better. Imagine that you have been arguing with your partner several times a week. The therapist might ask about the last time you had a calm conversation and what was different that day. Or if you are struggling with work stress, they may ask what a slightly better workday would look like.

You may leave with something to reflect on or try between sessions. This could be paying attention to a situation that went better than expected, trying a small change, or thinking about what you would like to see happen next.

How are fees structured for SFBT in India, and are there low-cost or sliding-scale options?

Fees can vary widely depending on the therapist's qualifications, experience, location, setting, and whether the session is online or in person. There is no single standard fee for SFBT in India.

Some therapists charge per session, while some clinics or mental health services may offer packages. Lower-cost options may also be available through community organisations, training clinics, NGOs, or platforms that offer subsidised sessions. Some therapists may have a limited number of sliding-scale spaces where the fee is adjusted based on a person's financial situation.

Before booking, it is reasonable to ask about the session fee, session length, cancellation charges, and whether they offer reduced-fee appointments. Solution-focused brief therapy does not have to mean a particular pricing structure, so the cost is usually determined by the therapist or service provider of the sessions.
